After breakfast, free time for the entire day. Guests who wish may join the optional Wonders of Holland tour to Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Marken, and Giethoorn (120 EUR). On our tour, we first head to Zaanse Schans to see the windmills. At Zaanse Schans, a fairy-tale Dutch windmill village where you can feel as if you have stepped back into the 17th century, there are 13 preserved active windmills and 35 historic houses, making it like an open-air museum. After our visit to Zaanse Schans, we will go to Volendam, an old fishing town. In the traffic-free harbor area of this peaceful town, we will have time to stroll among its colorful two-story historic houses, souvenir shops, especially cheese shops, and its lovely cafés and restaurants, as well as shop. Afterward, we will head to Marken, a village located on a small island. While walking through the village, we will visit a “Marken House” overlooking the harbor. This tiny house is furnished as it was when a Marken fishing family lived there until 1932, displaying the period’s furniture and décor. In the village, we will also visit a shop where the making of Dutch wooden clogs, part of the country’s cultural heritage, is demonstrated and where hundreds of colorful clogs are sold. Then we will proceed to Giethoorn, known as the Venice of Holland.
